Granite Bay, CA a Miner & Rancher's Paradise

The history of Granite Bay goes all the way back to the 1850s when gold miners set up shop by the American River. They first called the place Granite Bar. Apparently, about 37 gold mining camps popped up along this gorgeous river. From 1852 to 1954, Granite Bay was a hotspot for miners, especially with those olive and almond orchards around. One of the main streets in Granite Bay is Auburn-Folsom Road, which some folks might remember as the Auburn-Sacramento River Road. This road made it a lot easier for miners to haul their stuff back and forth.

But it wasn’t just the miners cashing in on the landscape; cattle ranchers were also taking advantage of the lush grass and water access to raise their herds. Auburn-Folsom Road has a pretty cool backstory. It started as a dirt track for ox carts connecting the 49er mining claims along the American River, helping to move supplies between Auburn and Folsom.

Granite Bay: A Community Rich in History

Before it became known as Granite Bay, the area was called Allen’s District, named after Hiram B. Allen. His family was among the first to settle there, along with the Cavitts and the Stallmans in the 1800s. The Cavitts lived at the west end of the road, while the Stallmans resided at the east end, a road that is now referred to as Cavitt Stallman Road. Today, Shelborne Estates occupies part of the former 420-acre Allen ranch.

Plum, peach, and pear orchards were the primary agricultural products of the area. Olives were also a significant crop at the ranch situated on what is now Olive Ranch Road, and remnants of the old olive trees can still be seen north of Douglas Boulevard. Allen’s District was home to one of the first real estate developments in the region, known as the Rosedale Colony, where land was selling for $50 an acre.
